Established in 1901, Cody, Wyoming is situated 52 miles from the eastern entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Cody was established in 1896 by Colonel William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, who traveled through the area in the 1870s. He was greatly impressed by the potential for development due to irrigation, fertile soil, magnificent scenery, hunting, and its closeness to Yellowstone National Park, leading him to return in the mid-1890s to establish a town. He was accompanied by men whose names are still present on street signs in the downtown area of Cody: Beck, Alger, Rumsey, Bleistein, and Salsbury.
