Candi Dasa is a coastal town located in the eastern part of Bali, situated on the brink of a freshwater lagoon. It's a favored destination for tourists and is often portrayed as a more tranquil and relaxed beach alternative to the bustling, nightclub-packed Kuta area or the expansive, well-kept resorts in Nusa Dua. Historical records suggest that a fishing village was established at this location by the 12th century. Before it was known as Candi Dasa, it was referred to as Teluk Kehen, meaning "Bay of Fire," and Cilidasa. A temple is located near the lagoon, featuring a statue of the fertility goddess Hariti, encircled by a group of children. The term cilidasa translates from Balinese to "ten children," hence many Balinese desiring to have children make a pilgrimage to this site. The current name is believed to be a distortion of this older name. The town started gaining popularity as a tourist spot in the 1970s, as it offers excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities and provides convenient access to other attractions in eastern Bali.
