For many people, West Yellowstone is a stopover town while journeying through Yellowstone National Park. The town is divided into two sections, residential and commercial, approximately along D Parkway. The area south of D Parkway (Alley) is primarily a business district, while the area north of it consists of houses and apartments. Locals refer to the area north of D Parkway as the "Madison Addition". The town has a single school that caters to students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
