Four imposing walls enclose a 4-hectare area in the heart of the old town, the epicenter of the Mormon Church known as Temple Square. The Cathedral of the Madeleine, a Christian edifice with a Romantic exterior and Gothic interior, was built between 1900 and 1909. Salt Lake City has evolved into the hub of a highly successful religious empire. While the prosperous city is home to many people of different faiths, the influential Mormon Church largely dictates the region's political decisions. However, less than half of the city's population are church members.
