Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka

Located in central Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa is a town that forms one of the corners of the island’s so‑called Cultural Triangle thanks to the presence of the ancient city of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa. It offers a fascinating collection of ruins and Buddhist sites spread over an area of up to 8 kilometers, best explored on foot or, especially, by bicycle. Founded by the Chola dynasty in the 10th century and considered the second-oldest city in Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa contains different sections that can be divided into five main groups, with several must‑see highlights on any visit: the Gal Vihara temple, with its reclining Buddhas carved in granite, including an outstanding statue of the Buddha lying down; the former imperial palace Weijantha Prasada; and the impressive Kiri Vihara stupa. All of this is set amid a tropical landscape dotted with monkeys and lotus-covered lakes, where pilgrims pause to meditate in the early hours of the morning.
