Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton, is the capital of the state of Sabah in East Malaysia, as well as the capital of Sabah’s West Coast Division. The city sits on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea, with Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park to its west and Mount Kinabalu—after which the city is named—to its east.
